As part of well design optimization, it is possible to determine:
- The number and depth of planting columns . On the basis of RUSS, intervals with uniform drilling conditions are allocated according to the specific gravity of the drilling mud, and, accordingly, the minimum possible number of columns and the depth of the shoes are determined. At the same time, the safe range of specific gravity and ECD are determined in such a way that in the interval of one section, the collapse gradient or formation pressure is not higher than absorption pressure.
- The length of the horizontal section. With an increase in the length of the horizontal section due to friction losses, the ECD increases. The maximum allowable ECD is limited by the absorption gradient, from which the maximum horizontal offset can be calculated.
- Section diameters. This point is related to the previous ones. By reducing the number of strings, it is possible to increase the diameters of the production string or liner. This, in turn, changes the hydraulic parameters, for example, the rate of increase of the ECD along the length of the barrel

Possible parameters for trajectory optimization:
- Azimuthal direction of drilling . In the case of anisotropy of the main horizontal stresses, the risks of complications when drilling a horizontal section strongly depend on the azimuthal direction. An azimuth sensitivity analysis of the WBS allows you to determine the direction with minimal risks.
- Opening angle of layered structures . The presence of stratifications in the interval of the set angle section significantly increases the risk of complications. By calculating the stability depending on the zenith angle and understanding the geological structure, it is possible to determine the optimal trajectory for passing through these intervals with minimal risk of collapse.
- Well position relative to faults . The presence of faults significantly affects the stress-strain state, and, consequently, the collapse and absorption gradients. Accounting for tectonics in the geomechanical model makes it possible to plan the well trajectory in an optimal manner from the point of view of drilling safety.

Well trajectory and design optimization can significantly reduce construction time and risks of geological complications. It is also possible to reduce metal consumption and other construction costs.
