Optimization of horizontal well construction in conditions of dynamic reservoir depletion

Object: Horizontal wells. A gas condensate field. West Siberian oil-and-gas province, Russia

The purpose of the work: Preventing complications and reducing the construction time of horizontal sections

Issues: 4 horizontal wells have been drilled at the field with an average drilling time of 90 days for the horizontal part. A large number of complications: absorption, seizure of the drilling tool. The loss of the horizontal holel and the drilling of the section under the shank.

Job Description:

The work was carried out in 3 stages:

  • Building a 4D geomechanical model;

An assumption was made about the effect of reservoir depletion on the stability of the borehole due to the development of an adjacent site. 4D modeling was performed, that is, the forecast of mining and geological conditions and a safe drilling window, taking into account the pressure reduction in the formation. The forecast showed a narrow window for safe drilling in the formation.

Рис. 1 WBS for the design and optimal trajectory

  • Optimization of well construction at the planning stage;

Understanding the safe drilling window and its dependence on the drilling direction made it possible to determine the safest drilling azimuth of the horizontal part and the optimal mud weight.

Рис. 2  Changing the trajectory of the horizontal hole from the design to the optimal one

The types of risks of geological and technological complications, as well as the intervals of their occurrence, are determined.

The volume of possible collapse sludge has been determined, recommendations for borehole cleaning in the form of a hole conditioning map have been issued.

  • Geomechanical support of well construction

During the drilling process, 24/7 monitoring of drilling was carried out, with support, the parameters of the safe drilling window were updated, according to the results of which recommendations were issued on the operational parameters of drilling and mud weight.

Result:

2 horizontal holes were optimized and drilled without complications. The average drilling time of the horizontal part is 18 days, reducing drilling of the horizontal part by 5 times.

In the implementation of this project accomplished:

Wellbore stability

Based on the obtained parameters of the geomechanical model for the planned well trajectory, the Wellbore Stability Calculation (WBS) is performed

Overpressure forecast

Currently, near-surface hydrocarbon reserves are being depleted. The development of deeper reservoirs faces several difficulties, both technical and geological in nature. One of the reasons leading to emergency situations is the presence of abnormally high formation pressure

Well's trajectories and construction optimization

According to the results of the Wellbore Stability wall Evaluation, the well design and trajectory are optimized. This is a complex iterative process, since changing one parameter requires revising others

Well's geomechanical modeling

1D - or borehole modeling is the base for geomechanical modeling. The 1D geomechanical model is a numerical representation of the Mechanical Earth Model (MEM) of the rock along the well trajectory. Such a model should reliably describe the behavior of the rock mass in terms of deformation and destruction

3D-Geomechanics

3D - geomechanical modeling allows you to fully take into account the change in the geological section along the lateral and the influence of tectonics. As a result of the simulation, the mechanical properties, pressures and stress-strain state at each point of the volume under study are determined. The model is built from the day surface to the horizons lying under the developed reservoirs

4D-Geomechanics

4D - geomechanical modeling - is the construction of a dynamic model - the necessary parameters are modeled not only in terms of the volume of the rock mass, but also in time

Core studies

The study of the core makes it possible to determine the physical and chemical properties of the rock, its permeability, the presence of oil or gas, as well as predict production conditions and assess the economic value of the deposit.
